We love hands on science! At the end of the week we made yellow yuck. In the pictures it looks like scrambled eggs, but in actuality it is a mixture of scientific proportion that provided an opportunity for fun and learning. Here is the recipe: In one heat resistant container combine 1cup elmer's glue, 2 cups of hot water and whatever food coloring you want. (I don't recommend red because it will stain) Mix that up. In another heat resistant conatiner combine 1/2 cup of very hot water and 2tsp. borax laundry booster and stir that up. Pour container of borax mixture into other mixture and VOILA--YUCK! The texture is smooth and plastic-like. It can be cut with cookie cutters and manipulated but when left untouched it will mold to the shape of its container. We then used our five senses to describe it and we filled out a chart providing factual adjectives and information about the substance. I eventually want to get lab coats (aka. white shirts) to give us that--we-are-scientists feel. This activity helped us get our hands in our school work, do some science investigation, and work on some language skills (adjectives) It was very worthwhile.
