Mundane Life

The school side of life
Last week, Andrew was drilling multiplication facts like crazy. Math is something Andrew struggles with and so we drill, drill, drill. His math curriculum allows him to drill aloud, build the multiplication fact with blocks, write the fact and then teach it back to me.

Andrew loves to use the computer to do his work and so we use it every chance we get. This year, Andrew is learning latin roots, prefixes and suffixes in spelling and vocabulary. I love this curriculum; it just makes sense to look at the latin since much of our english words are tied to it. We have learned deli, fin, grad, numer, ques, sens, studi, part, serv and vari words. I am learning lots myself.

Alora loves to cook! Brownies are her favorite dessert and so many times when she is cooking-- we are having brownies. She is learning to read and follow directions and measure correctly using the measuring cup and measuring spoon. Move over Betty Crocker there is a new girl in town!

This girl is knocking my socks off with her reading. I forget sometimes that she is really not even a first grader but a kindergartener since her birthday is in October. She loves to read and write and is just flying through her books and special sounds.

Andrew and I are reading through the book of John. I decided a few months ago that I just needed a gospel to read through and so I chose to read through the book of John, first thing every morning. This was a great opportunity to enforce some time with the Lord in the morning where the kids have a quiet time on their own. This has worked great. Andrew goes and snuggles up on my bed (that is is favorite spot) and has his quiet time and then Alora and I read through her kid's story Bible together. When Andrew is finished then we talk about it. What I have discovered is that much of the time, Andrew doesn't really understand everthing that he is reading, even though we read short sections of chapters. So our disscussion time afterwards is vitally important. I have really enjoyed this time with him.

This past week, Joey and Andrew made a compass. In Science, we are studying about the earth and its magnetism. So, the guys made a compass using: a needle, cork, sour cream lid and water. It really worked!

Life with Andrew is always an adventure!

The cooking side of life
I made a quick trip to Birmingham two weekends ago and met my parents for some breakfast and shopping and we were able to go to one of my favorite places: World Market! I cannot tell you the feeling that overcomes me when I walk into that store. I think I was just created with a major bent toward foreign travel and foreign countries. I bought Indian food, Thai food and German food--sheer bliss! So for the past two weeks, I have been trying out different dishes on Joey and, much to my surpirse, he likes them! He hasn't complained once and actually enjoyed them. Yay! Now if I can just get him to love Fettucini Alfredo!

Peshwari Chicken Tiki, Isn't it beautiful!

And Jasmine Rice! Mmmmm!
Also, we had a World Craft Party at church and everyone had to bring an ethnic food. Many deep southerners at our church did not enjoy this meal but I and many friends, who also enjoy my deep affection for other places and foods, loved it! It has been a culutral food experience in small town Alabama and it has been fabulous.

Yes it is Math-U-See. It has been really good for Andrew this year. We had a really hard time with 3rd grade math last year. Which book are you using?
