History is Alive at Our House

You may be wondering why the blogs are thinning out-- It is because I am positively boring. We haven't been doing much of anything: Basketball on Saturday, accompanied by roller skating with new friends, our usual Sunday activitites and then back to school (although we spontaneously took Monday off). Its not that those things are boring but just the same as usual, nothing out of the ordinary, nothing bloggable. On Monday I really wanted to take the kids to the Birmingham Civil Rights Museum, being Martin Luther King Jr. 's Birthday, but we had our monthly silver saints luncheon and then it was getting late. We called the museum and it was packed, of course, what was I thinking, and the museum closed early, so we stayed home. We will be going soon though. I have my heart set on it. So we watched the " I Have a Dream" speech on You Tube. (God bless You Tube) and then watched coverage of the assasination of MLK. I learned some things that I did not know, for example, I did not know that Jesse Jackson was with him on that balcony when he was shot. That explains alot to me and all of a sudden I see Jesse Jackson a little different than I did before. What a grim time in our history. We then turned on the local news only to find that a primarily all black church in Hartselle, Alabama, had arrived at their church that morning to remember Dr. King only to find a confederate flag had been placed in front of their doors. Andrew got his first lesson in, "This is why Dr. King specifically names Alabama in his speech. Its still going on. People hating people just because of the color of their skin."

Tuesday we spent alot of the day watching the inaguration. We made Andrew watch it even though he wasn't really interested. I remember where I was when key events in history took place during my lifetime and I want him to remember this event as well. I know he is probably sick of hearing us say how important this is to our country but I want him to understand the world in which he lives and the history that has led to this point.

This morning Joey found Alora in our bed with all of her animals and they were taking a trip. She had buckeld them in and they were off to--Egypt! I love it. (Thats what happens when you study history chronologically, we haven't left Egypt since we started in August.) I asked her about the trip when she emerged from the plane (my bed). She sat down on the couch and informed me that they had not arrived in Egypt yet, they were just coming to enjoy the in flight movie! I laughed and commenced blogging.
