Field Trip to Montgomery

Andrew and I had the awesome oppportunity to go with his previous classmates on their trip to our state's capital, Montgomery. How nice it was for them to invite us to tag along. Andrew was very excited about the chartered bus we would be taking down there and was able to sit with some old friends.

It was a beautiful day and so we began at the State Archives. We were able to tour there museum area and check out many displays.

We were able to meet some of our state representatives and have our picture with some of them, including the former mayor of Decatur and State Representative, Arthur Orr.

Andrew was taking in alot of information!

We went into the main capitol building and toured there. I can never resist rotunda pictures!

And I could not help taking a picture of everyone laying on the floor looking at the rotunda!

We had the awesome privilege of sitting in whild the Senate was in session. We sat behind glass and listened to them debate and discuss law and bills. They even interrupted their session to welcome us there as honored guests of Arthur Orr. How cool! We felt pretty snazzy. One representative even took a few minutes to not only welcome us but to share a word of testimony with us from his own life and also share the gospel! I am encouraged to know that the we have christian leadership helping to make the decisions that affect so many.
Andrew and I just finished learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and so going to his memorial fountain was a special treat. We recently watched a TIVOed special on the life of Dr. King and it was just so awesome to see history come alive! We passed Dexter Street Baptist Church on the way to the capital and I about came over my seat yelling up a couple row of seats, "ANDREW, ANDREW, There it is! There it is!" Its a good thing that I knew most of the parents and teachers on that bus--they already know I'm crazy so I didn't have to explain myself!
This was the highlight of my trip, I dont know about Andrew's but being at the church seeing the view of the capital, knowing what he faced as a radical reformer, standing where the march from Selma ended, I just was extremely reflective. I am fascinated with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I also had no idea that the church was just around the corner and up about a block from the Jefferson Davis' capital building! hmm....

Our last stop was Old Alabama Town where we had men and women dressed from the 1800's givng us lessons about what life would have been like then. The teacher is the school house was fabulous and Andrew was scared out of his wits!!!

On our way home we stopped for dinner at Peach Park in Clanton. I had never been to Peach Park and apparently I have been missing out on a serious Alabamian Tradition! Glad to be able to put that check mark on my "things to do before I die" checklist. The peach cobbler was awesome! The BBQ, well, I have had better--I live with the best griller of all time, after all!
We did not get home from this trip until 9pm. I was tired! I had some great home school discussions on the bus ride home. I love what I do and I am thankful God has allowed us the opportunity. I am also thankful for friends who include us in going on great trips like this one!

Too funny! I remember riding on a charter bus with Joey as our class went to Montgomery on a field trip in 5th grade. I don't even want to think about how long ago that was...Glad you got to go as a MOM now!
