Last Thursday we had a much-needed family night at home.
We made fall cookies with sprinkles on them.
We then designed our pumpkins and began to scoop them out all while sharing the gospel. We have loved redeeming this fall activity over the years and it really is a perfect opportunity to share God's love.
We began with sin. We shared that we are born sinful and that there is no way we can take care of our own sin, the same way this pumpkin can't clean itself up. We are utterly sinful and we stand in need of a savior. As we scooped all of the gunk out of the pumpkin, we shared that Jesus came to the earth as a sacrifice for sins. He was God's son, perfect lamb of God and He died so that sinners could be set free from the bondage of sin and live as new creations in Christ. We also shared that some of the remnants of pumpkin gunk were still in there, but not because we couldn't get it out. Jesus died once for all who would believe and His sacrifice was enough. Although we have received an overhaul (like the pumpkin), we still sin, but we are not mastered by it, just as the pumpkin is no longer overtaken with gunk. As a new creation, we live our lives, as believers, for Christ--to His glory. We then carved on the outside of the pumpkin, Andrew wanted a face and Alora wanted a cross, and then we placed a light inside. We shared that Jesus is Lord of our life when we place our faith in Him and turn from our sins; therefore He places His light in us. We are the light of the world. There was so much more that we talked about.

I love this way of pumpkin carving. Many years ago before John was reformed, we attended service at Briarwood Presbyterian with my parents. The pastor spoke of how God is like a farmer that goes into the pumpkin patch, picks us up, takes out all the junk in our lives and places His light in us, His Son. I leaned over to John and whispered, "Yeah, I guess you just walked out of there yourself." He said,"Ha,Ha."
Funny what a few years, intense study, and God can do. What a wonder to know that God has chosen us.
