Kicking Off A New Year of Homeschooling

Joey and I have again decided to home school for another year. We decided long ago to plan to do this long term but make the decision for just one year at a time. We learned so much last year and really feel like this is a good fit for our family. Whether you are pro home school or against home school, I think we can each agree that we will do whatever is right for our families, including quit our jobs and head home to teach our own kids when we feel led by God. We feel that home schooling is what's best for ours right now. We had a blast last year and we are looking forward to another school year together.

After much prayer and seeking, I believe we have found the curriculum and activities that we will participate in this year.

History- We are sticking with Veritas Press but this year we will be studying Ancient Greece and Rome.

Reading- We will continue to pour through good literature and apply what I have learned using the Foundations and Frameworks Reading Program put out by Briarwood.

Language and Phonics- Andrew will continue in Shurley English and Alora will be using Veritas Press's Phonics Museum and Shurley English for 1st grade. We are especially excited about the Phonics Museum this year. It incorporates handwriting, valuable readers, phonics games, cards and activities, spelling and art. We love it and feel it will be very refreshing and reviving for Alora and myself.

Science- Apologia Zoology. We completed Apologia's Astronomy last year and loved it and so we will be moving on to Zoology this year.

Math- Alora will make the shift from Saxon Math this year to Math U See Beta (Addition and Subtraction) and Andrew will stick with Math U See but promote to Delta (Division).

Spanish- Rosetta Stone continued.

Typing-Typer Island

Spelling- Andrew will be making the shift to a more independent self-teaching program put out by Institutes for Excellence in Writing called the Phonetic Zoo. He will use headphones and DVD for this program. I am very excited about some increased independent challenges for him.

Outside of our regular class time at home, we have joined a Home School CoOp. We are very excited about this. Every Tuesday we will go and join 65 other homeschoolers for classes from 9-2. The classes are for Andrew and Alora both and will consist of:
1) Art Appreciation (yeah, we don't have to leave town for art)
2) Geography of the Holy Land (we will be studying this area in our history program.)
3) PE (fun and games with other kids)
4) Zoology Lab (that corresponds with our science, how cool is that?)

As you can see, it is very exciting. And the people involved in the coop are so nice!!! In fact, one of the families, is the family we bought our house from 8 years ago! Coolio!

Andrew is also signed up to take drum lessons at a fine arts academy in our city and Alora will be taking piano lessons, so now we have our music covered.

Andrew will again be participating in Cub Scouts this year and that will begin next week. Alora really wants to take Karate but we are just going to have to get used to everything on our schedule first before we add anything else!

On top of all of this, I have become the Ladies Coordinator for our church as well as assisting in the Children's Dept. I have tons going on and only so many hours in the day, but I will save that for another blog.

Our official start date for school is Monday, August 17th and our official start date for coop is Tuseday, August 18th. I am excited about all that we are doing and about blogging it as we jump in next week.
