I did not decide to sign up for the 10K until we got to the beach. I had not trained consistently and just wasn't sure if I would even be able to make it 3 miles much less 6.4. The fall has proven to be a busy time and my running at home has really been spotty. Two days before the race I made the decision to "No Guts No Glory" and go for it!
The race began at 7:30 am just as the sun was on the horizon. It was great weather and everybody seemed to be really pumped up about the race. I bought a running skirt and sleeveless top to run in while at the shops in Gulf Shores so I would be properly dressed for warm weather. The running skirt was very comfy and is my new favorite piece of clothing. Girly running is awesome! The beginning of the race was beautiful--right on Beach Blvd! We were shaded by all of the condos and hotels and everything was glorious. I smiled as we turned off the blvd toward the lake at the state park. At mile 3.5 I began to feel like I was done--I knew it was going to happen. Let the head games begin. The trail was not a loop and so once we got to the 3 mile marker we turned around and headed back--right into the sun! Ugh-and I forgot to wear my sunglasses! It was hot and bright but I kept on running. I promise that road got longer after I turned around but I kept on running. By mile 5 I was really feeling it but as soon as I turned back on Beach Blvd I knew it was the home stretch. My family was there to cheer and support and surprisingly--
