Last week we decided that it was time for a field trip! We have not taken any in a loooong time and so we headed first to the Cook's Museum of Natural Science. They are a small museum that packs a nice insect and bird punch! We have been studying birds and insects so this went perfectly with our curriculum.
We found this guy and we couldn't help but have a picture made with him. I almost couldn't put this pic on the blog because it looked so stinking real!!! Freaks me out!
We identified many insects (they have quite a collection from all over the world), and then headed to Wheeler Wildlife Refuge for some outside bird watching. It was a beautifully cold day and so we did not stay out too long but we couldn't help but soak in some nature on this trail.
What I learned about birds is that you have to be very quiet if you want to really get a good look at them. What I learned about my kids is that this is IMPOSSIBLE for them. Btwn Lead Foot Louie and Stick Thrower Sam, I recognized that bird spotting was going to be tricky. We did, however see many birds.
Andrew took this picture!
Down at the end of the trail, there was a lookout tower and we really got to get a good look at some Mallard ducks.
The kids really enjoyed this part as we watched ducks dive and swim.
We were really pushing spring so we headed out for a picnic lunch next. I have no pictures of this because we were so cold that our picnic at the picnic table was cut short and we ate in the car. We are really ready for spring! It was a great day for field tripping and are looking ahead to a few other trips in the near future.
One involving the McWane Center to see the BugIMAX.
Yeah!
We are loving our study of Creepy Crawlys!
