Thoughts on Home Schooling

This is the time of year when all of us home school moms begin pouring through catalogs and making decisions about curriculum. It is a time of evaluation and reflection so there has been a whole lot of that going on. I think I began looking through catalogs around December because when we went to visit Jay and Francis, she and I pulled out the books she had and began the discussion. I love talking with my friends about homeschooling and gleaning wisdom from them. I really thought that I would be that home school mom who set the curriculum in motion when we started and would not stray from her decisions. But, alas, tis not true of me! Each year is a NEW year and sometimes we need to make changes. That is the beauty of it! We get to see what works and what doesn't and change when need be. I am absolutely against changing everything all the time--I do not believe this is the best for our kiddos. Mine need consistency and any changes I make, I try to implement them gradually and cautiously. I do not take curriculum decisions lightly and do not change on a whim. There is much research and prayer that goes into this whole process. With all that being said--I'm changing everything! Just kidding : ) I think I have just about figured out what I want to use and am just in the stages of getting it all together on one piece of paper to see the financial obligation. I DREAM BIG!

We are looking at a new Math Curriculum for my SIXTH grader. What in the world? Seriously! A SIXTH grader! When did that happen? Okay that is another blog, back on subject--I am in the process of looking at TEACHING TEXTBOOKS. It is computer based and would be a way to increase his independence. Plus, its on the computer! And if you know my little man, excuse me, SIXTH grader, you know that is right up his alley.

We will be adding My Father's World Countries and Cultures to our pallet next year. I have been so impressed with this as Frances has used it this year with her girls. I mean have you seen their blogs? Part of that is just that Frances is an amazing teacher/mom and has fabulous ideas but part of the coolio things they are doing in regards to countries and culutures are coming from this curriculum. I was able to put my hands on it twice when visiting her and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! So if my blogs next school year look alot like Frances' from this year--you know what happened : )

We are going to continue on with our Apologia Science series but next year we will be on to BOTANY! I actually bought Botany last year but when we joined our Coop, they were going to have labs for Zoology: Flying Creatures. So I switched, because we were eventually going to get to that one anyway; we just tackled it sooner. We have thoroughly enjoyed science this year. The labs at coop have been great and our study of insects has been interesting and fun this spring.

Alora will finish the Veritas Press Phonics Museum in May and there is not a phonics program for 2nd graders at Veritas Press (at least, not one that I have found) so, I am probably gonna head back to ABEKA for phonics, spelling and handwriting. She has done a great job with it this year but I am not ready to surrender phonics yet. These years are so formative. If she weren't so shy I would put up a video of her reading. IT IS AWESOME. But she would die a thousand deaths if she saw herself reading on my blog, soooo you will just have to come to our house and request a story by Alora : )

We are going to continue on with Veritas Press History-Rome to the Reformation. I cannot even tell you the richness of studying history chronologically and not Ameri-central.

Shurley English will remain our language because it's the best (my opinion)! Alora will continue on in Math U SEE. and IEW's Phonetic Zoo will be Andrew's continued spelling curriculum. We are going to continue learning Spanish (Rosetta Stone) and, as far as I know, continue going to coop.

Well, those are my home school thoughts for next year. I presented everything to Joey last night; he is so supportive. He trusts me but challenges me. I am thankful the kids have a dad who is an active part of their lives and who cares about their education. We make a good team.
